Dressing for Failure: How the Death of Home Ec Unraveled Ame_rican Fashion
The following is PattyV's comment on the above article.
Being a Home Economics graduate, fashion isn't the only thing that was lost when removed from school curriculum. How about teaching the basics of food preparation? Learning to cook is not only healthier but more economical for singles and families. When I look at pictures in the 40's, 50's and 60's the first thing noticed is how much thinner people were overall. One reason is most cooking was done right in the home. Eating at home was a ritual not a once in a while thing. Bringing back the basics of cooking, how to shop for healthy food, budgeting, meal planning should be a requirement in order to graduate in our schools. Who knows it might even inspire our students to pursue a career in some aspect of Food.
